There's many a good buzz word at the moment surrounding Cloud computing. What will its impacts be and what does it mean to the average person on the street?
Cloud computing or being part of a user Cloud is nothing new in fact this form of computing has been around for the last six years or more. This has been in the form of company intranet systems and outsourced online billing and customer management systems available through web browsers or desktop applications over a network. Cloud computing was born out of the need for large companies to outsource some of their computing services. This allowed large corporations to concentrate on their core business and avoid heavy investment in computers and people to govern them.
Basically what a cloud or cluster is, is a large computer hosting/running software which is accessed and shared remotely via users with high to performance, who take advantage of its software or services or anything in fact. This ultimately as you can see saves money as each users computer uses its own piece of software at the moment with a cost attached to this along with upgrade fees and support. For large companies the management of all of it's laptop's and computers requires large resources of staff with the ability to database the information manage software upgrades as well as the normal activity of support. Different PCs running different drivers and different software can also complicate a workgroup with the sharing of files. Cloud computing does away with this as its platform is standardized and managed like a "wheel hub" with users being the "spokes" that access it.
With the advent of fast broadband and also the announcement of even faster fibre optic networks opens up even more the possibility for Cloud computing.
So what about the average person on the street?
Well in fact you have been using, cloud computing or a version of it, here's why, if you access a online banking systems this system is a piece of software to you from the sense that it functions performs tasks and allows you to make payments and manage your finances.
What I find incredibly strange is people seem more comfortable using online banking than using a piece of Cloud supplied software online for instance to create a piece of word processing or charting?
Social networking website are breaking news bounds of what a website is. Because there is a strong argument that in fact its a web application allowing more control, integration managing of pictures, contacts and calendar events. Which in the past these functions would have been managed by separate pieces of software.
The Benefits
Cloud computing has massive benefits to individual's which include:-
* Reduction in the cost of software to a users personal PC
* Pay as you go culture forming, for the use of software
* Only use what you need for instance the average word processing package, its features are only used around 30%
* Faster update and release of software centrally managed
* Smaller lower cost PC's and devices
Issues
* Security this will play a major part in the future of Cloud computing
* Costs to users how much how often how charges are made
* Large central computing centers needed which require large facilities
* Connection speed and availability of access needs to be 100% for users
We are all whether we like it or not in the Cloud whether you are a social networking site user, you use your companies systems to do your work or you bank online. If you have your online details stored or any account details you are in the Cloud. The only question is, is how long will it take before fuller integration will occur. As long as desktop computers have the concept that powers is key on the desktop. Until the weight is shifted to cables and connection speeds this will be the key deciding factor on Cloud computing.
